What's your story? What brought you to Metro?

I have always had a passion for art and design so the creative industry was an obvious career path for me. I trained to become a graphic designer at AUT and then completed a design & print apprenticeship. After living and working as a graphic designer in Matamata for 10 years, I decided to make a lifestyle change and move to beautiful Mount Maunganui. The timing of the move was perfect as my eldest daughter was just about to start school.

My background was mainly in design & print so when the Metro position came up, I was eager to take on a role that could expand my skill set to include more digital work. Also, Tauranga’s larger scale of cliental meant more creative opportunities for me to develop as a designer. I couldn’t be happier living at the beach and working with an inspiring group of fellow designers.

What does a typical day at Metro look like for you?

I start each day by clearing emails and making a plan for the day – a priority list. Most days are busy with a diverse range of jobs to complete which makes each day interesting. We all beaver away at our job list, sometimes stopping to get each other’s creative opinions on things as we go. Most of my day is spent using InDesign, developing concepts, graphics and layouts, aiming to visually communicate the client's story, brand or ideas.

Describe yourself in three words...

Efficient, focused, passionate.

What’s the best part of your job?

Every day is different, with each new brief throwing up a new creative challenge. Producing unique things on a daily basis and problem solving the best ways to communicate the ideas visually. It’s also very satisfying to transform basic text and images into a visually attractive design.

What has been your favourite project to date and why?

My favourite project to date was working on the Westpac Tauranga Business Awards event collateral for 2019/2020. LOVE LOCAL was an inspiring theme to work with and it was a lot of fun creating graphic elements of native birds and the Bay of Plenty cityscape. I enjoyed carrying the design through all the print and digital collateral and then seeing it all being used on the event night.
